The First Goblet (2025)

Low Fire Ceramics

In The First Goblet, Xu uses the chalice as a form to examine her relationship with her breasts. It carries a dual meaning, drawing references to intimacy and motherhood. The tongue wrapped around the nipple yet one drop of milk slides its way down it.

These expectations exist simultaneously, creating a quiet tension between pleasure and responsibility. Like The Wailing Pool, the work reflects the unease of inhabiting a body shaped by expectation—where care, consumption, and vulnerability converge.
