About

In her most recent work, Xu embodies the experience of living within a vessel through this series of work, using the thrown ceramic vase as a metaphor. The terminology surrounding vessels lends itself to this metaphor. In my experience, my body is a vessel that I occupy, allowing me to be perceived, yet I do not feel that I embody it. For many others, I have found that one’s body accurately represents how the one embodying it feels and wants to be seen, but this does not ring true for all. This series explores that dissonance with bodily vases colliding against detached bodies portraying this divide in self. It visualises how the sensation of self contradicts the outside perception of you. This series aims to take you through a collection of moments where these sensations and perceptions of self break down in two separate feelings, yet concludes with an acceptance of the dissonance present.
